New Service Schedule

On Sunday, September 9, 2018, Salem will begin a newly formatted Sunday schedule featuring an additional (middle) worship service, and an additional small group (BFG) hour. Below are some “Frequently Asked Questions” that might provide you with some of the specific answers you would like to have to be prepared for what is coming. Your pastors are very excited about, and focused on, being a church / people in constant pursuit of making disciples that make disciples. It is worth the extra work and challenges we face, and we know that mission is also the reason people like you attend a church like Salem. Thank you for praying earnestly for the various things God leads the church to do through the pastors He has called to Salem. We certainly value your support.

Check back soon for more information as we will be adding videos explaining the new service schedule and answers to frequently asked questions.  Also be praying about how God can use you to help us as we seek to make more space for more people! We are excited about what God is doing at Salem and the opportunity we have to join Him in His work as we seek to glorify God, make disciples, and share His story.

Why are we doing this?

This is all about our mission. If we are really here to “glorify God, make disciples who pursue Jesus, and share His story,” then we cannot simply keep the status quo when we are currently out of BFG classrooms at 9:45 AM and short on parking at 11 AM. So, we are intending to engage the whole congregation in a great and exciting new venture to claim our neighborhood for Christ by using our open time slot on campus on Sunday mornings to feature rooms for new small groups and a new worship service. This is really what it is all about when we talk about being on mission to grow the Kingdom.

When will this happen and what will be the new time schedule?

The first Sunday for the new Sunday schedule will be September 9, 2018 and the planned schedule is:

8:15 AM Early Worship

9:40 AM Middle Worship and BFG (A)

11:00 AM Late Worship and BFG (B)

We have built in an extra 5 minutes between activities to try to give everyone a little more time, and to give the folks who will finish on campus at 10:40 AM a few extra minutes to vacate their parking places. We will really need all BFG’s to wrap up by 10:40 AM.

How will the three worship services be formatted?

The plan is for the two already existing worship services to remain in the same format, and the newly forming service to be contemporary. So, the worship services will look like this:

8:15 AM Traditional Worship

*9:40 AM Contemporary Worship

11:00 AM Modern Blended Worship

*Indicates new middle worship service

Will this affect the future of The Hill (the Saturday service)?

To make sure that we are not spread too thin in regards to childcare and musician resources, we will be asking The Hill attendees to consider moving to the new service at 9:40 AM on Sundays. The final evening for the Hill as a Saturday service is planned for August 25. That evening, we will celebrate the wonderful things God has done on Saturday nights and the things He is about to do in this transition to Sundays at 9:40 AM.

What will be offered at the new BGF hour?

The details of the BFG offerings will come into focus more clearly in the next few months. A few BFG’s may well decide to transition to the new BFG hour as a group, which will be great. But ultimately our hope is for the church family to prayerfully and passionately rally around the vision of creating and birthing new groups to meet the challenge of the growth happening around Salem.

Will this affect my kid’s schedules?

Not really… Your kids will continue to have the opportunities to do kids worship, attend a great BFG, or attend a worship service with mom and dad. As always, that will be up to you as parents to determine! We do hope that as our kids see us get super excited about our mission to make disciples, it will have a profound impact on them even if not much changes in their schedule.

How will my BFG or my Community Group be affected?

Your BFG and / or your community group is not going anywhere! The BFG’s can engage in a conversation about moving to BFG hour “B” if they choose to do so.

What can I do to help?

Throughout the summer we are going to have some prayer opportunities for the church family about this big effort. We really would like to get everyone praying corporately, but we also covet your prayers individually. Additionally, we are creating some little response cards which you can use to let us know areas of interest in which you would like to engage in the new offerings (birth a new BFG, music, Preschool Ministry, etc.).

Did we consider other solutions?

As was mentioned in the introduction video that went out to all the church families, we thought about a variety of things from doing nothing to focusing on off-campus solutions. But the bottom line is that your pastors believe that this is what God has for us as a way to respond immediately to the “problems” we face. We have an awesome campus with lots of rooms; we have an open Sunday morning time slot to use, so let’s use it. The future will certainly hold other options for us in time, but this is what we can do now to stay aligned with our mission.

There are no perfect solutions, but God has led your pastors to initiate a schedule that Salem has actually had for many years, specifically 2001 thru 2010. In this way, we are very familiar with this schedule’s benefits and challenges. The real key is that we need many, many quality available adult meeting spaces which we do not currently have, not just a few empty corners. We plan to continue to reach many people. A new BFG hour will mean dozens of new spaces available and we are praying we fill them with dozens of new classes eventually, and then have to find yet more ways to inconvenience all of us! Won’t that be exciting for the Kingdom of God!

Regarding parking, the new schedule will help free parking a bit ... It helps in that many will migrate from 11:00 AM to the new middle service (we are hoping to have 200 willing, missions-minded folks agree to make the shift for 12 months), but only about half of them will be active in a BFG by our normal metrics. It will also help parking in that we are adjusting the BFG’s timing and we will insist that all 9:40 AM BFG’s dismiss no later than 10:40 AM so that parking places will open up a bit earlier. Finally, we are also identifying a few additional overflow locations on campus to expand parking availability.

Will the same sermon be used in each service?

Yes, in most weeks. This will be similar to Salem’s schedule from 2001–2010. The same sermon from Dr. Beckett will be spoken in all three services. Because of the speaking load, there will likely be a bit more rotational work from our other pastors mixed in as well.
