What We Believe
Salem recognizes the Baptist Faith and Message (1971) as a statement of the truths of Holy Scripture, which our church holds dear. We acknowledge that each person is competent to read and interpret the scriptures and there is great diversity. Yet, we wish to communicate those core beliefs, which Baptists have historically cherished, and which we will proclaim.
- We believe in the one and only living and true God. The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, yet one in nature and purpose.
- We believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, yet He became flesh (incarnation), and died as a sacrifice for the sins of all people on the cross.
- We believe the Bible was written by persons divinely inspired, and it is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter.
- We believe that mankind was created by the act of God and in the image of God. Yet sin has separated us all from God, and we have no hope for eternal life without the death of Jesus on the cross for our sins.
- We believe that salvation is the free gift of God offered to all who accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord by faith.
- We believe the New Testament church is a local body of believers who have come together by believer’s baptism for the purpose of promoting the good news of Jesus around the world through worship, evangelism, ministry, fellowship, and discipleship. In a larger sense we believe that the redeemed of all the ages makes up the body of Christ, the Church.
- Our church recognizes two ordinances, meaning religious acts done for their deep symbolic meaning, which are believer’s baptism by immersion, and the Lord’s Supper, sometimes called communion.
- Our church believes in the promise of Christ that He will return, and that the nature and timing of this is known only in the heart of God, so our duty is to be prepared and to diligently spread the good news of the love and forgiveness of God.
