Mission Groups and Opportunities
WMU (Women's Missionary Union) at Salem
Salem has been a member of the National WMU since the early 1920’s and has a strong history of supporting missions work. Currently Salem supports the following WMU programs - Woman's Missionary Union, Women on Mission (Barker Howell Group), Girls in Action, and Mission Friends. Salem also participates in collecting funds for the Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong offerings. Annual local mission projects include Operation Christmas Child and the Women’s Prison Cake Ministry.
Women On Mission (Barker Howell Mission Prayer Group)
Women on Mission® is a mission organization for women (ages 18 and up) through which women pray for and give to missions, learn about missions, grow spiritually toward a missions lifestyle, and participate in being on mission with Jesus Christ.
Barker Howell Mission Prayer group began in the early 1900's as a small group organized by Mrs. Barker and Mrs. Howell. Women worked together through prayer meetings, fellowships, outreach events and missions projects to help spread God's Word. This tradition continues at monthly meetings, September through May. Any woman (ages 18 and up) is welcome. We share fellowship, food, and personal prayer concerns; lift up practical needs of missionaries; do projects, and enjoy guest speakers.
The primary resource for Women on Mission is Missions Mosaic magazine, which contains articles to inform and inspire today's Baptist women.
The Barker Howell Mission Prayer Group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month, September through May at Spring Arbor. (Please check the church calendar to confirm the time, date, and location.)
Mission Friends
Mission Friends is the preschool missions organization of WMU. It is a place for preschoolers, birth through kindergarten to become aware of God's love. Each month, preschoolers learn about a missionary in a different place throughout the world.
Preschoolers learn about missions in Mission Friends through hands-on activities, sensory activities, Bible thoughts, cultural learning activities, mission stories, prayer, giving, and helping others.
Mission Friends is offered on Wednesday nights at our church, September through May.
Girls In Action (GA)
Girls in Action (GA) is a missions organization of the WMU for girls aged 6-11 or in grades 1-6. GA helps girls grow in their spiritual development as they learn the biblical basis of missions and discover their part in God's plan.
In GA®, girls pray for missionaries and their work, discover how they can help other people, learn what missionaries do and how they can support the missionaries, save and give money to help tell other people about Jesus, grow spiritually and develop a missions lifestyle, and participate in the other areas of church and denominational life.
The girls also participate in WorldVentures, an individual achievement plan. They complete activities related to all aspects of missions and GA.
Throughout the year the GA meet with the RA (boys aged 6-11 or in grades 1-6) for special events such as Christmas in August, the International Mission Study, and the North American Mission Study.
GA is offered on Wednesday nights at our church, September through May.
