Frequently Asked Question  Regarding Registration

1. How long have you been Director?

This is my 16th year as Director. Prior to being here I was a preschool teacher for six years. My background is in Speech Communications from NCSU. I am a Wake County native, married 32 years with two children.

2. What are your teacher requirements?

Our lead teachers are required to have four year college degrees or the equivalent. Many have degrees in education but this is not a requirement. Our first requirement is for our leads to be mature Christians who follow Christ in leading the children.  Teacher Assistants are required to be Christians, however, they are not required to have a college degree, although many do. All staff receive background checks.

3.  How academic are you? What do you teach?

Our staff attends workshops annually as well as having participated in preschool/kindergarten grants and symposiums. Our emphasis is on students overall development, self regulation, problem solving, social skills and cognitive skills. Early childhood specialist have found that what children learn through play is phenomenal. We do have structured play time as well as instructional time. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, " Child initiated, teacher supported play that incorporates math and language skills is an essential component of what is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers." Our priority is also their spiritual development through classroom experiences, chapel and music. Our four year olds are very well prepared for Kindergarten. Many area elementary schools tell us they can always tell when a Kindergarten comes from Salem Preschool.

4. What are my chances of getting in?

Our registration process is by lottery. So one person's chance is as good as someone else. When your lottery number is called you will be given the opportunity to sign up for whatever is available. Availability in each class will be made known to the public the day before public lottery.. Historically the following classes have been filled by our returning students and their sibling and therefore unavailable to the public. WF twos, MWF threes and MWF fours have usually been unavailable to the public. Every year is a little different. I do keep to a even split ratio of boys to girls in every class. The breakdown of openings LAST YEAR were: 15 openings for twos, 20 openings for threes, 14 openings for fours and 3 openings for Transition. The best thing we can tell you to do is PRAY.
